The International Roma Day has been celebrated since 1990, and is marked for the 8th of April. It honours the first World Roma Congress of the International Roma Union - the first major international meeting of Roma representatives, that took place from the 7th of April until the 12th of April near London.

The congress approved the current design of the Roma flag, and the song Gelem, Gelem was adopted as the Roma anthem. Usage of the word "Roma" (rather than variants of "gypsy") was also accepted by a majority of attendees.

The International Roma Day is an occasion to present the Roma culture, history and language, but also to to raise awareness of the situation of Roma and human rights issues they face.
